RAY-404 What Are You Gonna Do With a Drunken Sailor?

January 2017

After 35 years Joey Know and I have decided
to retire Crosstown Correspondence.
The mail art moment and the postal experience
have changed quite a lot over the years--
cards routinely delivered without postmarks,
cards lost in the post office.
We kept it going all these years in an effort
to add to the history of the medium of the original artists postcard,
A genre that precedes Ray Johnson and mail art by at least a century--
since the carte postale was invented artists
applied art to the quotidian mail experience.
Starting this blog probably extended
our project by at least five years.
But we both agree it is time, gentlemen and ladies
of the mail for us to jump ship.
That's why the particular card is so appropriate
for the final example: it is comprised and composed around
a vintage postcard Joey gave me at Xmas, a last collaboration.
This blog will be here for future views
so these classic works following on from DADA,
Surrealism, Situationism, Fluxus, Pop Art, and Punk
will continue to be available for study
Objective chance was always a governing force in our composition
Chance encounters with printed matter that seemed
to shatter and reform in a zeitgeist kaleidoscope.
DIG you must
